Game interfaces built around English strings often look clean until the German or Russian build drops. A button that read “Settings” suddenly stretches into “Einstellungen.” A menu label that sat neatly inside its box now collides with the next element or gets clipped mid-word. In Chinese-source projects the gap is even wider: European languages routinely need far more horizontal space, and Cyrillic glyphs in Russian often render wider still. The result is overlapping text, broken layouts, or strings that look like visual noise. Players notice immediately. Reviews mention it. The polish that sold the game in one market evaporates in another.

Text expansion is not random. Industry measurements consistently put German at roughly 20–40 percent longer than English on average, with short UI strings expanding more dramatically—sometimes doubling or tripling in the worst cases. Document hard and soft character limits per string in the localization kit so translators know the constraints and can adapt phrasing without waiting for a later LQA cycle. Icons next to high-frequency actions reduce reliance on text altogether. In extreme cases a parallel layout for high-expansion languages keeps buttons usable without forcing every other language into the same compromise.

Pseudo-localization remains the cheapest early filter. Replace every string with a lengthened, accented version, then run the build through every supported resolution and aspect ratio. What breaks under the fake German will break under the real one. Linguistic quality assurance later catches the residual cases—strings that fit in theory but look cramped once the actual font metrics and kerning are applied. Character-limit notes also prevent the common trap of translators producing accurate but unusable text; when limits are known, native speakers can choose concise alternatives or accepted abbreviations without sacrificing meaning.
